The story behind “Faithfully” by TobyMac

Story behind the song “Faithfully”:

“It’s the only song on the record, really, without a guest because I just couldn’t hear anybody else singing it. It was so deeply personal to me, about God’s faithfulness at the hardest time in my life.”

“I was still so numb, my heart broken. And another song came out of our loss. It’s actually one of my favorite’s on the record. I wrote ‘I may never be the same man, but I’m a man who still believes.’”

“I’ve always written songs about the things that I’m walking through and the things that I’m feeling. I’m not really good at writing fictional songs. I write about my own life and I figure as I walk with God in this crazy world and try to pursue heaven, that became the most important thing. The people that listen to my music, they’re not that different than me. We’re all trying to live out this faith that we talk about and we want to pursue, but the world mixes us up sometimes. I think that’s what I’ve always written about, so it was natural for me to write about what I was walking through.”

"Through this season, I just kept writing. I think it was my way of dealing with it, honestly, and even asking, being confused, and even being willing to lay out being confused in a song and being frustrated with God. But coming out on the other side, I realized how He's so good to us and kind. Even in the darkest valley, He doesn't promise to take away the pain, but He promises that He'll be there in it with us, and He was and He is still."

Lyrics to “Faithfully”:

It's been a long year, it almost took me down, I swear
Life was so good
I'm not so sure we knew what we had
I'll never be the same man
I'll never feel like I felt before (felt before)
It's been a hard year, it almost took me down

But when my world broke into pieces
You were there faithfully
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You made a way for me
I may never be the same man
But I'm a man who still believes
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You were there faithfully

I've had a hard time
Findin' the blue in the skies above me
And if I'm keepin' it real
I've been half-faking the happy they see
I may look like the same man
But I'm half the man I was (half the man I was)
It's been a hard year, it almost took me down

But when my world broke into pieces
You were there faithfully
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You made a way for me
I may never be the same man
But I'm a man who still believes
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You were there faithfully

In my darkest hour, You met me
So quietly, so gently
You said You'd never leave
And You stood by Your word
So quietly, so gently
In all my pain, You met me
You said You'd never leave
And You stood by Your word

'Cause when my world broke into pieces
You were there faithfully
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You made a way for me
I may never be the same man
But I'm a man who still believes
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You were there faithfully

When I cried out to You, Jesus
You were there faithfully
