The story behind “Hold On” by Katy Nichole

Story behind the song “Hold On”:

“This song is incredibly important to me, and it’s a little bit harder for me to talk about because it’s such a deep part of my story and it is a little bit darker. I’ve dealt with a lot of anxiety and depression in my life and even at one point had suicidal thoughts. There was one point where I picked up a bottle of pills and I took it to the bathroom, and when I did—there was nothing in my path—but that bottle of pills fell onto the floor and spilled.

In that moment I felt God saying to me, ‘Hold on, I’m not done yet.’ I picked up those pills and threw them in the trash can because I knew that God still had a plan and a purpose for my life. I hope this song can encourage you and remind you that your life matters so, so much and you can hold on because you have a purpose.”

“That moment for me was the reason that I am here today, the reason why I know that there is purpose in our pain, and the reason why I feel like I have such a strong belief and a faith in my God. He saved my life not just once but on many occasions. I still go through things sometimes where I need to be reminded to hold on. I really want to remind people that they are worth so much to our God, that there is a purpose in their life. That purpose has nothing to do with us, but everything to do with Jesus.”

“This song was written over so many seasons of my life. It’s been probably eight or nine years in the making. Really, this is a song of hope. I actually discovered who God was. God wanted me, and I didn’t even understand that until the moment I wanted to give up. Even as a believer, I didn’t know it was God until later on when I realized, ‘Oh, my life’s purpose is to serve.’ This song encapsulates that there’s a bigger picture beyond what you can see in the moment — beyond the pain, beyond the struggle. And holding on was the only way I could see that.”

Lyrics to “Hold On”:

Smoke clouds
All around
Couldn't see Your face
Darkness consumed me
Stuck in the bitterness

But I know there's a light
That's waiting up ahead
So I'll stay in the fight
And look to the One who said

Hold on just a little bit longer
I know it's gonna be okay
These days are gonna make you stronger
You'll find purpose in the pain
Hold on just a little bit longer
Deep down there's a well of faith
Let hope arise as you're lifting up My name
And just hold on
Just hold on, hold on

Your promise
It still stands
It's chasing after me
The rainbow
Through storm clouds
Is how I'm gonna see

That there is a light
That's waiting up ahead
So I'll stay in the fight
And look to the One who said

Hold on just a little bit longer
I know it's gonna be okay
These days are gonna make you stronger
You'll find purpose in the pain
Hold on just a little bit longer
Deep down there's a well of faith
Let hope arise as you're lifting up My name
And just hold on
Hold on, hold on

Just wait 'til you see what's at the end of the road
A new life is ready to unfold

Hold on just a little bit longer
I know it's gonna be okay
These days are gonna make you stronger
You'll find purpose in the pain
Hold on just a little bit longer
Deep down there's a well of faith
Let hope arise as you're lifting up My name
And just hold on
Hold on, hold on
Just hold on
Just hold on
